Inflatable Penile Prosthesis Surgery

A permanent, patient-controlled solution for erectile dysfunction — performed by a fellowship-trained prosthetic urologist and Coloplast Titan Center of Excellence surgeon.

An inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) is the most reliable treatment for men with erectile dysfunction who haven't found success with medications, injections, vacuum devices, or other therapies. Unlike pills that temporarily improve blood flow, a penile implant restores the ability to achieve a firm erection on demand — putting control back in the patient's hands.

For many men, penile implant surgery ends years of frustration and begins a return to spontaneity, confidence, and intimacy.

"Penile implant surgery is not simply about restoring an erection. It's about restoring confidence, intimacy, and quality of life. I approach every operation with meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to maximizing length, girth, and rigidity."
— Kian Asanad, MD

What Is an Inflatable Penile Prosthesis?

An IPP is a fully concealed medical device implanted inside the body. It has three parts:

  • Two inflatable cylinders placed within the penis
  • A fluid reservoir hidden within the pelvis
  • A small pump concealed within the scrotum

To produce an erection, the patient squeezes the pump in the scrotum — fluid moves from the reservoir into the cylinders. After intercourse, a release valve returns the fluid. The implant is entirely internal and invisible to others.

Coloplast Titan® Center of Excellence

Asanad MD is a designated Center of Excellence for the Coloplast Titan implant. The Titan is built from Bioflex® — a durable material engineered for repeated inflation cycles, exceptional rigidity, and significant girth expansion. It's a particularly strong option for men with Peyronie's disease or penile fibrosis.

The Device

Coloplast Titan® Inflatable Penile Prosthesis

Three-piece system with Bioflex® cylinders, a concealed scrotal pump, and a pelvic fluid reservoir — engineered for natural inflation, durable rigidity, and significant girth expansion. Hydrovantage® coating supports faster implantation. Patient satisfaction exceeds 96%.

Benefits of the Titan device

  • Excellent rigidity for penetrative intercourse
  • Significant girth expansion
  • Natural appearance — inflated and deflated
  • Long-term mechanical reliability
  • High patient and partner satisfaction
  • Strong option for Peyronie's disease and penile fibrosis

Who Is a Candidate?

Penile implant surgery may be appropriate for men with:

  • ED that doesn't respond to oral medications
  • Side effects from ED medications
  • Diabetes-related erectile dysfunction
  • ED following prostate cancer treatment
  • Peyronie's disease with erectile dysfunction
  • Venous leak erectile dysfunction
  • ED following pelvic surgery or trauma

Most patients have already tried Viagra or Cialis, injection therapy, shockwave therapy, or vacuum devices without satisfactory results.

Preoperative Evaluation

Every patient undergoes a full men's sexual health evaluation before surgery — detailed history, physical exam, hormonal evaluation, cardiovascular risk assessment, review of prior ED treatments, and penile duplex ultrasound when indicated. The goal: confirm the implant is the right call and select the optimal device and surgical strategy.

The Surgical Approach

Minimally invasive infrapubic technique

Dr. Asanad specializes in the minimally invasive infrapubic approach. Through a small incision just above the penis, the implant is positioned entirely within the body.

  • Small, cosmetically hidden incision
  • Excellent exposure for precise implant placement
  • Reduced scrotal dissection
  • Minimal postoperative discomfort
  • Faster recovery

The procedure runs roughly 45–60 minutes in experienced hands, performed with meticulous infection prevention — specialized antibiotic protocols and implant coating techniques.

Outpatient surgery

Most patients arrive the morning of surgery, return home the same day, and resume light daily activities within several days.

Recovery Timeline

First week

Mild swelling and discomfort. Walking encouraged. Pain medication is typically discontinued quickly.

1–2 weeks

Return to desk work and normal daily activities. Significant improvement in swelling.

2–3 weeks

Device teaching and activation. Begin cycling the implant.

3–4 weeks

Most patients are cleared for sexual activity.

Does It Affect Sensation or Orgasm?

No. A penile implant does not alter penile sensation, ability to achieve orgasm, ability to ejaculate (if present before surgery), or sexual desire. The implant simply restores rigidity. Most patients report that sexual activity feels natural and intuitive — the focus shifts to intimacy, not whether an erection will hold.

Satisfaction Rates

Among all ED treatments, penile implants consistently demonstrate the highest patient and partner satisfaction rates — routinely exceeding 90%. That makes it one of the most successful procedures in all of urology.

Why satisfaction is so high

  • Reliable erections every time
  • No planning around medications
  • No waiting for pills to work
  • Increased spontaneity
  • Long-term solution

Insurance Coverage

Most major insurance plans — including Medicare, many PPO plans, and numerous commercial carriers — cover penile implant surgery when medically indicated for ED. The team handles insurance authorization and benefits verification before surgery. Self-pay and financing options are available for patients without coverage.
